How it’s calculated
Promoters answer 9 or 10, passives 7 or 8, and detractors 0 to 6.
NPS = % promoters − % detractors. Passives count in the total but don’t add or subtract.
The result goes from −100 (all detractors) to +100 (all promoters).
How to read the result
- Any NPS above 0 means you have more promoters than detractors.
- What helps most is comparing against yourself over time and reading why people gave that score. Always add an open question after it.
- With few responses NPS swings a lot: with 30 responses, one person moves the score by more than 3 points.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a good NPS?
- It depends a lot on industry and country. As a general reference, above 30 is usually considered good and above 50 very good.
- Why don’t 7s and 8s count?
- They are satisfied but not enthusiastic customers: unlikely to actively recommend you or to stay if something better comes along.
- How do I run an NPS survey?
- SurvIQ has a ready-made NPS question and an NPS survey template. Results show the score and the three groups automatically.
