Compare two percentages

Enter how many people in each group chose an answer and how many answered in total. It tells you whether the difference is statistically significant or could be due to chance.

Group A
Group B

The difference is significant

At 95% confidence, a difference this large is unlikely to be due to chance.

How it’s calculated

It uses the pooled two-proportion z-test: z = (p₁ − p₂) / √(p × (1 − p) × (1/n₁ + 1/n₂)), where p is the proportion of both groups together.

The p-value is two-sided: the probability of seeing a difference this large, in either direction, if the two groups were actually the same.

The difference is significant when the p-value is below 1 − the confidence level (0.05 at 95%).

How to read the result

  • Significant doesn’t mean large. With many responses, a 2-point difference can be significant and still not matter.
  • If it isn’t significant, that doesn’t prove the groups are the same: you may not have enough responses to notice.
  • The test works well when each group has at least about 10 people in each answer (yes and no).

Frequently asked questions

What is it useful for in a survey?
Comparing segments: men and women, new and returning customers, this month and last month, or two versions of a page.
What is the p-value?
The probability of getting a difference like yours by chance alone. The smaller it is, the surer you can be the difference is real.
Can I compare averages with this tool?
No. It is for percentages (how many chose an option). For averages, a t-test is used.
